Pinterest + Wedding Planning

Pinterest can be a bride's best friend or worst nightmare.  There are hundreds if not thousands, no actually, millions of ideas out there for planning every aspect of a wedding: showers, ceremony, and receptions etc.  Let's tackle the following questions that often arise when Pinterest becomes part of the wedding planning procedure!

What is Pinterest & how can you use it to plan a wedding?

Pinterest is an online service that allows you to share and save images that link to websites.  It has become a popular way to glance at a variety of topics (wedding planning being a big one) and get ideas to make your event unique to your tastes, creativity, and budget.  It reminds me of scanning a Bridal magazine but better because I can focus on things specifically matching my taste, theme, colors, and budget!  Sign up for a free account and make boards to save ideas or simply, visit the website and start searching.  It's recommended to set up an account so you can jump in and enjoy the long-term benefits while planning a wedding.  Once you've set up an account click the SAVE button to keep the idea

How can one break through the Pinterest overload and find a happy balance between being overwhelmed and standard wedding ideas?

Here are some suggestions!
  • Go to Pinterest with a goal -- for example, it's easier to narrow down flowers for a church ceremony by searching specific words such as <<wedding ceremony church flowers, red>> vs. <<church flowers>>.  Don't break it down too far that you don't find anything creative except for what you already know, but be sure to have a plan.
  • Stay Organized -- make an account & then make boards for specific aspects of the wedding so when you go to meet with vendors, you can easily share your ideas and what you've found.  Giant wedding boards with all aspects of the event lumped together wind up becoming too hard to sort through especially if you're meeting with vendors or plan to share the ideas with friends or family.  "Wait, let me find it on Pinterest," becomes a couple minutes of scrolling vs. a quick reference for a meeting.
  • Look to the pros in your area -- planning a wedding involves many different vendors and places.  Ask your vendors if they have Pinterest boards (We Do!) and follow them for targeted ideas using people who have experience and to get ideas based on a company or theme you already have selected.  Search Wedding ideas for your location <<Buffalo Brides - Buffalo News; Buffalo Indie Weddings>> who have boards that link to vendors and ideas unique to your area.  Who knows, you might stumble upon a vendor you didn't know about by searching for these Buffalo sites!  Once you've found something or someone you like, don't forget to click FOLLOW  to keep up to date when your vendors update their pages with more content.
  • Share your boards or keep them secret -- love looking for wedding dresses, but don't want your fiance to see?  Keep the board secret by clicking the pencil on the board & moving the secret toggle switch.  You can also share any board or secret boards with fellow pinners!  Maybe your Maid of Honor loves Pinterest -- set up a board & she can go to town adding pins that are great ideas for any part of the Big Day!
Of course, these are all ideas and suggestions to try and tame Pinterest's guide to wedding planning so it becomes more manageable and enjoyable as you sort through all the different aspects of your big day!
